VisiQuate chooses EPAM as its Strategic Offshore Development Partner

The Client

VisiQuate, a leader in SaaS-delivered Enterprise Performance Management, was looking to build an offshore Center of Excellence (CoE) to help deliver and support its Enterprise and Business Performance Management (EPM/BPM/BI) solutions. Located in Northern California, VisiQuate delivers its solutions to clients in healthcare, financial services, and commercial construction.

The Challenge

VisiQuate has succeeded in standing out within a crowded EPM / BPM / BI sector by creating three main product differentiators:

  1. Their visually advanced, highly intuitive user interfaces.
  2. Their integrated, actionable workflow, and guided eLearning features which enhance their clients ability to take action on key indicators or metrics. VisiQuate calls this Turning BI into Business Action.
  3. The rich complement of industry domain experts offered by their high touch service model. These experts help clients benchmark, set, and achieve the best performance targets and outcomes.

Given VisiQuate’s need for strong differentiation in the highly competitive markets they operate in, they needed much more than a traditional offshore services provider. They needed a software development partner who could align strongly with their vision, one that combined exceptionally strong product engineering skills for SaaS and large enterprise solutions, with real-world business acumen from large scale BI, EPM, and BPM. They also insisted that their partner should have the strong business-level knowledge needed to develop the intuitive user experiences their clients were demanding. One of VisiQuate’s biggest differentiators is a highly flexible approach to personalizing the user experience, despite its being a true multi-tenant solution. This requires extremely AGILE practices in software development, enhancement, and maintenance, which narrowed down the list of suitable offshore providers.

The Solution

At a previous company, the VisiQuate founders and staff successfully built offshore delivery centers with EPAM and with two other eastern European vendors, as well as one significant captive center, which ultimately offered over 500 US hospitals and health care providers daily BI and Analytic insights into their financial, operational, and clinical data. This experience of Budapest, St Petersburg, Kharkiv, and Lviv, working with 3 vendors and building a captive center, meant that VisiQuate knew the pros and cons of different locations and engagement models. They had a clear vision of the key decision drivers in selecting the right partner: A rare blend of Domain Skills, Technical Excellence, and Scalability, plus a strong emphasis on value and productivity.

After examining three locations and three vendors, they chose EPAM. According to Brian Robertson, VisiQuate’s Founder and CEO, “Beyond their ability to build high-quality Industry leading software products, what impressed me about EPAM is how much they care about creating tangible business value for the end user. Throughout the development process, they offer great wisdom, insight, and creativity about the design and effectiveness of the end product. This is critically important to us, because we focus like a laser beam on creating solutions that provide both a great user experience and compelling ROI opportunity for our clients.”

JK Kolmansberger, VisiQuate’s President and Co-Founder, further commented, “With EPAM, we also have great confidence in their ability to work with us during complex sales pursuits. EPAM’s people are very gifted in the technical sales engineering process, acting as true partners and always providing the appropriate balance between technical and business value. Simply put, they have impressed every C-Suite executive we have ever put them in front of over the years.”

Rich Waller, VisiQuate’s Co-Founder and CTO, also understands the value of a strategic offshore partner who can satisfy their need to build quality software in an extremely fast-paced entrepreneurial environment. According to Waller, “Following our evaluation of vendors, EPAM was clearly the gold standard because they offered the strongest SDLC tool-set, which is extremely mature, totally comprehensive, and well proven. It is uniquely built to support distributed AGILE processes. Working within health care and insurance sectors demands absolutely the highest level of security and data protection / confidentiality, which is usually at odds with the move to offshore work. However, EPAM’s ISO27001 and ISAE 3000 Type 2 (SAS 70 Type II) certifications, which have been in place for many years and are continuously maintained, were unmatched by any vendor in the eastern European region and not equaled by many US companies. They were able to deliver much of the core team of 15 talented BI software engineers at the outset, rather than offer a “we’ll recruit it for you” approach. Our skills need was quite broad and varied, but EPAM also brings specialized expertise in the areas most important to us, including SaaS, BI, Content, Cloud, Mobile and Financial Services.”

The Technologies

A variety of technologies are leveraged by the ODC that we developed and operate for VisiQuate, including, but not limited to the following:

  • J2EE
  • JBoss
  • FLEX
  • PHP
  • Alfresco
  • Microsoft SQL Server & SSIS
  • MicroStrategy
The Results

EPAM and VisiQuate began their partnership in October 2010. In just nine months, VisiQuate has grown its ODC to over 40 engineers, and is already successfully delivering its solutions to over 50 unique clients who rely on its ability to serve up daily actionable business intelligence, guided workflow, and learning effectiveness solutions.

As Brian Robertson further noted, “We plan to grow this company at a breakneck speed. When we were just a few guys with a big vision, EPAM believed in us at the top level and committed to us. We see a true collaboration, not a simple vendor/client relationship. This allows us to deliver a solid service delivery platform that increases tremendously the speed at which we can grow. At the same time, we enjoy an exceptional cost to quality ratio, which helps us win and grow our client base. And now that our business is growing rapidly, the only thing more impressive than EPAM’s engineering talent and SDLC platform has been their continued commitment to grow with us.”
