Mature and Integrated Software Engineering: EPAM Systems' Minsk Development Center Becomes the First CMMI® Maturity Level 4 Organization in Europe

Press Release:

Princeton, NJ, Minsk, Belarus — September 30, 2003 — The Minsk Development Center of EPAM Systems, Inc. headquartered in Princeton, NJ (www.epam.com), becomes the first software organization in Europe to pass a formal assessment against the requirements of the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) at Maturity Level 4. CMMI is a new and more demanding model developed by the SEI (Software Engineering Institute, Carnegie Mellon University) for assessing a company's software engineering capability and the maturity of an organization's processes.

The assessment was carried out by a team headed by the SEI-authorized Lead Assessor Kent A. Johnson, TeraQuest Metrics, Inc. according to the Standard CMMI® Assessment Method for Process Improvementsm (SCAMPIsm). The training and consulting had been provided by TeraQuest in partnership with Gartner Group, Inc.

Upon completion of the assessment Mr. Johnson announced: "We were extremely impressed with the maturity of the software engineering process implementation in the company and with the evident client-oriented organization of EPAM. They not only know "what", but also attach great importance to "how" they should do things to meet the client's requirements in the best possible way. EPAM stands out through successfully striving to involve members from all organizational levels into decision-making and by implementing the industry proven best practices throughout the project life cycle."

The CMMI Maturity Level 4 achieved by EPAM Systems focuses on the quantitative management of organizational process performance and project management. To ensure visibility, quantitative and integrated management, EPAM introduced a set of proprietary applications, such as EPAM Project Management Center and EPAM Utilization and Project Staffing Analyzer. These tools provide top-level organizational environment and control over collaborative project development.

Igor Ovsianik, EPAM QA Director and the Software Process Improvement Lead said: "It was strategically important not to rest on yesterday's successes as a guarantee of future return. After we won an ISO 9001:2000 certificate in early 2002 we realized we should go forward and plan for a CMMI assessment. This model was selected as the premier one for software companies and technology organizations in general. The model copes with a major modern challenge: the need for integration which is a prerequisite for success in today's business climate."

Arkadiy Dobkin, EPAM CEO, noted in this respect: "By validating the company's software development capability, this rating positions EPAM among the best software providers worldwide. Only about ten other organizations have CMMI level 4 or 5 today and none of them in Europe. It just confirms the leading position of EPAM Systems as a software services vendor and presents a valuable option for global corporations looking for geographical diversification of its offshore software providers."
