The Head of Platform Engineering is responsible for the end-to-end health of the shared Cloud infrastructure and platform built to power Digital products and services. Working collaboratively with technology teams, the Head of Platform Engineering will help to drive operations and automation to accelerate product delivery and ensure consistent and stable services. They will ensure that the technologies employed across environments including security and DevOps are effectively operated through a mixture of in-house and third party teams and services. They will provide a resilient, secure, and highly available platform for our products and services to run on and ensure that the overall strategy for platform delivery is defined, approved, and implemented.


  • Strategic:
    • To establish, deliver, and refine a platform engineering roadmap to ensure that all platforms and products remain current, deliver value to product engineering teams, and supports the needs of internal stakeholders in terms of scalability, resilience, security, capacity, and operational maintenance
    • Define a technology roadmap that includes deliverables focused on the continued improvement of the supported solutions and empowering a DevOps culture through the use of automated platform capabilities underpinning customer-focused product engineering and development
    • Anticipate product features by tracking dependent product strategies and roadmaps, eliciting stakeholder input, monitoring industry advancements, and collecting business needs
    • Inform the development of the overall solutions architecture, ensuring that our underlying platforms are designed and engineered to facilitate and empower innovative product development and promoting automation, reuse, and consistency across the technology estate
    • Develop and build a well-documented and centralised API estate, promoting reuse, and supporting API versioning and end-to-end lifecycle management
    • Oversee the design and build of platform services with appropriate levels of security, ensuring that they are secure by design. Respond swiftly to new and emerging security threats and vulnerabilities
    • Define and implement policies to manage the platforms securely, including identity and access management, patching, and disaster recovery
  • Operational:
    • Create tools and automated workflow capabilities to enable our software engineers to test and promote code across the different environments and into production with maximum velocity
    • In collaboration with Product Engineering, and colleagues in Service Management and Operations, work to reduce or eliminate manual or repetitive tasks, improving the end-to-end health and performance of the underlying platforms
    • To ensure that the infrastructure is developed in a manner that supports delivery of services to multiple platforms with appropriate levels of resilience and performance
    • To ensure that the business has a common, consistent, and flexible platform that continuously delivers the tools, interfaces, and components that drive our products and services
  • Management & Leadership:
    • Participate in and play a critical role in the technology leadership team, helping to drive company strategy at business scale
    • To keep abreast of technical developments of operational importance to the company, identify best practice technologies to the business, participate in developing or setting standards and to assist with improving the standard of technical delivery and competencies within the technical teams
    • Line manage a team of DevOps engineers and Cloud technical architects to deliver the platform technical roadmap, creating a set of key measures to assure quality and control of engineering capability and performance. Create a line of sight to corporate aims and objectives, ensuring that staff are clear on their purpose and deliverables
    • Build morale and motivation to bring out the best in your people, enabling them to do the best work of their lives, while building and retaining critical skills and potential
  • Personal Development:
    • Ensure that any personal data obtained and processed is treated in accordance with data protection principles followed by the Group, as well as applicable Group policies and Procedures on data protection and information security
    • Consult the Group’s Data Protection Officer (DPO) office prior to making decisions on the processing, storage, retention and deletion of professional data with regards to responding to Subject Access Requests (SARs), conducting Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIAs) and identifying any personal data breach, if there is no policy or procedure that provides adequate guidance
  • Operational Safety:
    • Responsible to ensure that employees at all levels understand work health and safety requirements and expectations through provision of relevant QR Group induction, information, instruction, training and supervision
    • Ensure compliance to all relevant safety, security, quality and environmental management policies, procedures and controls across the operation to assure employee safety, security, legislative compliance and delivery of high-quality service with a responsible environmental attitude
    • Ensure that all managers and supervisors understand work health and safety requirements and expectations to the extent that they can pass on relevant information, identify training needs and provide appropriate supervision in their workplace
    • Take a direct and personal interest in reported injuries, incidents, near misses and hazards to ensure that appropriate reporting, investigation, and response is being achieved
  • Environmental Competencies:
    • Contribute towards the Environmental Objectives and targets and the implementation and maintenance of the Environmental Management System
    • Apply environmental knowledge and principles in your role, and incorporate this into business processes and decision making, to drive efficiencies and reduce environmental and operational risks


  • Relevant College or University qualification to min Bachelor's level
  • Minimum 10 years relevant experience
  • Expert in cloud computing platforms (Microsoft Azure highly preferred)
  • Broad experience in building CI/CD pipelines through the use of common stack (Jenkins, etc)
  • Experience with managing and configuring logging and monitoring systems
  • Experience with container run times such as Kubernetes highly desirable
  • Experience with board cloud, monitoring, infra as code tech desirable
  • Job Specific Skills:
    • Cloud architecture
    • Infrastructure as code style provisioning
    • Build of CI/CD pipelines for service-based architectures
    • Very good command of English
    • Demonstrated success in building an environment which fosters and rewards collaboration, accountability, and trust
    • Excellent communication and relationship building skills across every level of the organization
