EPAM BUILDS FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND POISON EMERGENCY APP & ONLINE TRIAGE TOOL

The National Capital Poison Center (NCPC), more commonly known as Poison Control, asked for EPAM’s help to reverse a disturbing trend – the number of poisoning deaths was rising, while the number of calls to Poison Centers was decreasing. To remedy this issue, EPAM worked with NCPC and its own internal digital strategy and experience design practice, Empathy Lab®, to design webPOISONCONTROL®, a free website and application to guide victims and those surrounding them in poison emergencies.

The idea was to make the knowledge of a poison control center toxicologist readily available to anyone with a PC, tablet or smartphone. The result was a first-of-its-kind life-saving poison emergency application and online triage tool designed to:

  • Identify the poisonous substance by searching a database of 52,000 pharmaceutical, supplements, household products and plants and 207,000 product barcodes
  • Recognize potentially poisonous ingredients through an innovative recommendation engine built on 3,300 complex algorithms that accurately analyzes age, weight, thresholds and ingredients
  • Instruct victims of poisoning emergencies whether swallowed, splashed in the eye or skin or inhaled toward the correct pathway for treatment
  • Scale infrastructure quickly and efficiently through the integration of Microsoft Azure
