How Boden Cut IT Costs 10% by Migrating from Legacy eCommerce to Shopify

British clothing retailer Boden migrated from its home-brewed e-commerce platform to Shopify after years of financial struggle, achieving a 10% reduction in IT costs and 50% reduction in front-end development resources

British clothing brand Boden says a key part of its ongoing rebirth as a company has been a structured transition off its old home-brewed e-commerce stack to Shopify - a move that its CIO helped to make as easy as possible for the then-struggling business by stopping all spending on the incumbent system for nine months.

That meant when the green light was given for the port, it was all hands on deck - but help from the brand's chosen implementation partner, US-headquartered IT services and consulting specialist EPAM Systems, meant that the cut-over was much smoother than expected.

Alex Ives, Boden's Senior Director of Technology, says the organization - live on Shopify since January 2025 - now enjoys reduced IT cost and much quicker adoption of new features.

A bump in the Boden road

Ives works for a sustainability-conscious apparel retailer founded in 1991 by colorful UK entrepreneur Jonnie Boden, who still runs the company.

In the succeeding decades, the company has built a reputation for fashions for women and children. From its UK roots, the company has expanded into Europe, the US, and beyond.

However, in the first couple of years of the 2020s, Boden had unfortunately started to falter.

The good news is that after delivering sales growth across all of its major markets, the company returned to profitability at the end of 2024 - but Ives says tough times had concentrated the minds of he and the rest of his IT team as to what they could do to help.
