Consultancy & Code: Building Responsible AI at EPAM Mexico

“Transformation can occur at multiple levels, but right now we need to help companies understand the difference between AI and automation because they’re not the same thing,” Claudio says. Recent studies show that end users are rarely willing to pay a premium for AI alone. This highlights the need for expert guidance to help organizations choose the right tools, avoid implementing tech for only the fear of missing out and focus on solutions that impact their business goals.

Claudio Espinoza knows that the future of AI is not just tech —it’s the people building it. That’s why he focuses on mentoring to help the next generation of professionals find their footing in the industry.

The Importance of Responsibility

“Considering ethical responsibility is essential when discussingAI. I personally like to focus on transparency,” Claudio says. Professionals in this field need to know how and why an AI model reaches specific results. Modern solutions must be explainable — saying “it’s a mathematical model” is no longer enough. “Companies can have the best intentions, but if they use a model that’s not explainable or transparent, they can make decisions based on biases that negatively impact people’s lives or create legal liability,” he warns.

The next critical step toward responsible AI implementation is privacy. Because organizations collect highly sensitive personal data and biometrics, developers and engineers must act with confidence and integrity.

“Acting with a focus on ethics gives confidence to your users, ensures the innovation you create is secure and mitigates risks," Claudio notes. “It’s important that engineers do not perpetuate outdated ideas that negatively affect people. We must guarantee the right safeguards are in place and ensure a human validates the products we create.”

EPAM provides numerous tools to ensure the ethical implementation of technology, including EPAM AI/RUN™ — a platform that checks and validates multiple layers of everything we create. Combined with strong partnerships with organizations like Anthropic and OpenAI, EPAM maintains a transparency framework that defines our standard for AI engineering excellence.

Building an AI Career

Emerging technologies offer engineers new opportunities to specialize and become leading voices in their fields. Claudio highlights the importance of hands-on practice. While the journey for many starts with Python due to its extensive libraries and abundant resources, this is only the beginning.

For developers aspiring to use AI, it is essential to build a solid foundation in traditional coding practices. This foundational knowledge ensures you can fix broken systems, scale solutions smartly and act effectively during a crisis.

“AI may help you clean your code better than anyone, but understanding the real needs of a client, the abstraction and the thinking process — that’s entirely human,” Claudio adds.

When asked for career advice, Claudio keeps it straightforward: “Most people will not be replaced by AI, but they could be replaced by someone who knows how to use AI because they will never be as productive as someone who has mastered these tools. The key is to get to work, experiment and learn. That is what leads to success.”
