EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
With fragmented documentation, manual medication calculations and no unified patient history view, a medical center needed more than its standard electronic medical record (EMR) system could deliver. EPAM partnered with AWS to build an agentic AI solution embedded directly inside its existing EMR. The result: time savings across workflows, projected $1M in cost savings and a scalable foundation for continued AI expansion.

THE CHALLENGE
A leading U.S.-based medical center specializing in complex bleeding and clotting disorders ran its care on a standard EMR that couldn’t keep pace with rising patient volumes. Clinical and administrative teams faced a set of connected problems, each compounding the next. This resulted in:
- Fragmented Bleed Documentation: Clinicians had to create a new EMR encounter for every individual bleed event, driving repetitive data entry and a scattered patient history with no simple way to capture episodic documentation in one place.
- No Longitudinal Patient View: Bleed data lived across many separate encounters, so clinicians couldn't easily see a patient's full history. That slowed informed, timely care decisions.
- Error-prone Medication Workflows: Complex prescription templates for hemophilia medications raised the risk of dosing errors. The system offered no built-in calculator, and pharmacy workflows were slow and disjointed.
- Ineffective Form Management: The center managed more than 50 clinical assessment forms with no standardization, dynamic logic or digital scoring, forcing teams onto paper processes that hurt productivity and introduced inconsistency.
- Dispersed Surgical Knowledge: Surgical planning ran on a mix of inefficient EMR entries and manual spreadsheets, with no central tool to capture surgical history or guide future procedures.
- Manual Multidisciplinary Reporting: Combining input from multiple doctors and specialties into one coherent summary was a slow, manual task with a high margin for error.
The center needed a partner who could build a deeply integrated, purpose-built solution without disrupting daily clinical operations. That’s where EPAM’s expertise in AI and AWS tooling came in.
THE SOLUTION
EPAM designed and built a modular suite of AI custom applications, all embedded within the center's existing EMR. The approach prioritized seamless integration, so clinicians gained new capabilities inside the tools they already use every day.
The architecture runs on React micro-frontends, Node.js microservices, AWS Lambda serverless compute, Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon Bedrock for GenAI. This serverless design keeps costs aligned with usage, scales on demand and integrates tightly with the EMR.
