For 35 years, the mission of the biotechnology company Regeneron has been to use the power of science to bring new medicines to patients with serious diseases. Given how data and analytics can accelerate the speed of delivery — from early discovery to manufacturing and commercialization — Regeneron knew that the stronger its data literacy, the faster it could bring medicines to patients. Regeneron partnered with EPAM Continuum to design an innovative data literacy program to power more data-driven insights.
DEFINING OBJECTIVES
Embrace and Cultivate a Data-Literate Workforce
As a leading research-based pharmaceutical company, Regeneron produces and analyzes vast amounts of data every day — data that is growing exponentially in volume, velocity and variety. Regeneron leadership recognized that a data-literate workforce — one that uses data as a company asset in decision-making, evaluates and questions data, knows how to find data, and confidently interacts with data to derive insights and tell a story about it — is critical to business success.
To grow data maturity in the company, Regeneron defined three key data literacy objectives:
A THREE-PRONGED STRATEGY
Developing the First-of-Its-Kind Data Literacy Program
To achieve its goal, Regeneron partnered with EPAM Continuum to create a three-pronged strategy that leverages shared frameworks and methodologies from The Data Lodge®:
The resulting program was one of the first of its kind, with Regeneron on the leading edge of a global trend.

POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM PARTICIPANTS
“This first training module is very impressive — maybe the best training module I've seen in my 10 years at Regeneron. Content is clear, concise and has been scoped appropriately based on existing personal knowledge reported by each trainee. You can find an estimated completion time for each section, a breadcrumb trail showing progress, videos with adjustable playback speed and an editable workbook for ongoing consistent learning and engagement. I had no technical issues, I was able to leave my training and return back to it, and I wasn’t overwhelmed by knowledge checks.”
A NEW WAY OF WORKING
Embracing a Data-Literate Workforce
The program’s success is shown in the way Regeneron colleagues approach their projects, collaborate with data and speak about data in their daily work lives today. Here are some examples:
- One participant immediately began applying their knowledge in meetings.
- The Senior Director of Portfolio Management, whose team participated in the program, has been able to make better data-informed decisions by analyzing archived data and integrating it with new data, scrubbing the information and learning about project staffing, resourcing and other factors that impact project delivery.
- A Lead Business Analyst reported that participating in the program made her think more about the data within her projects and recognize what adjustments should be made to align data to be more consistent for a true comparison so she could leverage data as an enterprise asset and ensure regulatory compliance.
Moreover, the impact of the program can be seen in the momentum it has gained across the organization and its organic growth to other groups from research and pre-clinical development, regulatory affairs and medical affairs to global safety.
IMPACT TO DATE
Regeneron was able to reach its data literacy objectives through the success of this program. Some of the results include:
450+
participants (including pilots)
21%
increase (on average) in knowledge from the beginning to end of the program
92%
of participants said that the content “is a valuable part of my data literacy journey”
83%
of participants said that the program “is significant to my daily tasks and job function”
40%
increase in awareness of Regeneron’s data catalog
21%
increase in awareness of data assets
Participants thought the program was well-designed and well-tailored to Regeneron’s needs, helpful for developing a common language and understanding, and directly applicable to data they use regularly.
