Legacy IT Systems Hinder Digital Transformation

A recent report from EPAM Systems, a software engineering firm and digital transformation service provider, sheds light on the evolving landscape of the insurance industry worldwide and particularly in Switzerland, driven by emerging information technologies. The study surveyed 200 decision-makers from insurance firms based in the United Kingdom, the United States, Singapore, Switzerland, and Bermuda. The findings underscore the role of outdated IT systems in impeding digital transformation within the insurance sector. A substantial 45 percent of respondents identified outdated technological infrastructure as the primary obstacle to adopting digital tools and innovative work practices.
Capacity constraints were also highlighted:
Of the 25 Swiss companies surveyed, 62 percent cited inadequate funding as the major hurdle. Other challenges included isolated corporate structures (57 percent) and legacy technology infrastructure (56 percent). Notably, half of the Swiss insurance firms surveyed are presently engaged in central transformation initiatives aimed at replacing legacy systems. However, the most commonly cited barrier to addressing legacy systems promptly, at 44 percent, was a lack of capacity.
Ingo Weinem, Global Co-Head of Insurance at EPAM and lead author of the report, summarized the findings, emphasizing the need for Swiss insurers to strategically invest in technology renewal. He stressed the importance of fostering an agile mindset and employing data-driven decision-making to ensure the success of digital transformation in insurance companies.

Für die Studie wurden 200 Entscheidungsträger von Versicherungsunternehmen in Großbritannien, den USA, Singapur, der Schweiz und Bermuda befragt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen auf, wie veraltete IT-Systeme die digitale Transformation im Versicherungssektor behindern. Beachtliche 45 Prozent der Befragten nannten eine veraltete technologische Infrastruktur als Haupthindernis für die Einführung digitaler Tools und innovativer Arbeitsmethoden.

Von den 25 befragten Schweizer Unternehmen nannten 62 Prozent eine unzureichende Finanzierung als Haupthindernis. Weitere Herausforderungen waren isolierte Unternehmensstrukturen (57 Prozent) und eine veraltete technologische Infrastruktur (56 Prozent). Bemerkenswert ist, dass die Hälfte der befragten Schweizer Versicherungsunternehmen derzeit an zentralen Transformationsinitiativen zur Ablösung von Altsystemen arbeitet. Das am häufigsten genannte Hindernis für eine zeitnahe Ablösung von Altsystemen ist jedoch mit 44 Prozent ein Mangel an Kapazitäten.
