More Than Just a Discount: Why the Digital Customer Experience Determines Sales Success
Black Friday, the holidays, flash sales, or summer promotions: major discount campaigns can lead to a significant increase in the number of e-commerce website visitors in a short time. But more visitors do not automatically lead to more revenue. A slow page, unclear navigation, or a malfunctioning checkout process can be enough to lose a potential customer.
It is precisely during busy promotional periods that existing bottlenecks in the customer journey become particularly visible. According to Dirk Jan van der Pol, Head of Commerce, EMEA at Empathy Lab by EPAM, these moments serve as an important test for the entire digital customer experience.
“For retailers, a major discount campaign is not only a marketing opportunity but also a stress test for the entire digital customer experience. A good customer experience is not just about technology. It is primarily about ensuring that the entire customer journey aligns with what visitors want to do: from searching and browsing to ordering and paying,” says Van der Pol.
A good digital customer experience requires continuous attention. Retailers would therefore be wise to test and improve their customer journey not only around major campaigns, but throughout the entire year. Four points of attention are important in this regard:
- Review the entire customer journey: Test not just individual pages, but the entire process from searching and comparing to ordering and paying. Do this on different devices and with varying internet connections.
- Prepare the e-commerce website for peak traffic: Check how search functions, inventory systems, discount codes, and payment processes function when the number of visitors increases sharply.
- Make accessibility a permanent part of the process: Test the website with keyboard navigation and screen readers and, where possible, involve users who rely on these tools.
- Use data to continuously improve: Analytics data can provide insight into where visitors experience delays or drop off. AI can help identify patterns and potential bottlenecks more quickly. It is then up to the involved teams to translate these insights into concrete improvements.
