Medtech’s Digital Experience Is Ready for an Upgrade
For years, medtech companies have treated the digital experience around their devices as an afterthought. A layer of software bolted on after the hardware was designed, engineered, and approved. That approach no longer holds up. In the AI era, the way clinicians, patients, and health systems interact with a device is no longer secondary to the device itself. It is the device. The digital experience is becoming an increasingly important part of the product.
To operate successfully going forward, medtech companies need to hold their software experience design to the same standard as the best digital products people use every day; anything less risks disengagement, poor adoption, and, at worst, patient harm.
Why digital experience is now a safety issue, not just a convenience
Clinicians who grew up on intuitive consumer software have little patience for the clunky, counterintuitive interfaces still common in clinical settings. Patients increasingly expect the same seamlessness from their care as they get from everything else in their digital lives. And health systems, under constant pressure to do more with less, depend on tools that reduce friction, rather than add to it.
When digital experience design falls short, the consequences compound quickly. Confusing interfaces contribute to cognitive overload for already-stretched care providers. Poor usability suppresses adoption, meaning even clinically sound technology never delivers its intended value. In the worst cases, poorly designed interfaces can become a factor contributing to medical errors.
