Building Test Automation Excellence at EPAM Mexico

Building Test Automation Excellence at EPAM Mexico

As a child, Moisés Ruiz never envisioned a career in tech. Today, as a Lead Software Test Automation Engineer at EPAM Mexico, he is a key figure in the company’s quality engineering team. He is known for his commitment to engineering excellence and for mentoring colleagues as they advance their careers and begin working with JavaScript.

How Do You Start a Career in Test Automation?

As a teenager, Moises was captivated by chemistry. When his college plans changed, he decided to explore the tech industry. The industry seemed fun and exciting, and although he had no prior experience, he quickly realized it was exactly the career path he wanted to pursue.

During his first internship, he dedicated himself to android development. When he learned there were no immediate opportunities in mobile development, a mentor suggested he try testing. His reply was simple. “What’s testing?” After a quick primer about the discipline, he decided to give it a shot and quickly found his niche.

He started as a Functional Tester, but for his bachelor’s thesis, he explored test automation and how it helps businesses achieve new standards of quality. He’s never looked back. He has worked to hone his craft and lead in quality engineering ever since.

And while he might not have chosen test automation initially, there’s no doubt for him that it was the right choice.

For Moises, EPAM’s commitment to building a friendly community of experts has been essential for his professional growth.

Why choose EPAM for Quality Engineering?

Moises worked at a variety of companies, both locally and globally, before joining the team. But it was EPAM where he found a place where he could consistently learn and advance his career.  “One of the reasons I’ve stayed at EPAM is because I feel stable and in constant growth at the same time. And my technical level has increased significantly since I joined.” In his five years at the company, he’s gone from a middle engineer to a management position.  “I don’t think I could have achieved this level of growth anywhere else. EPAM’s assessment process is easy to follow, and if you prepare properly, you can reach your goals,” he adds.

Work-life balance has been another difference-maker that Moises found at EPAM.  At EPAM, he’s found a more manageable schedule that gives him more control over his time and effort. This has given him plenty of time to pursue his other passions and find the balance required to thrive in all aspects of his life .

All of this, combined with a friendly culture that feels like a real community that goes beyond corporate formalities, fosters collaboration between teams and creates an ideal environment for creative ideas to emerge.

How Do Playwright and AI Transform Quality Engineering?

In his role, Moises relies on Playwright to ensure that all the software we release meets the highest standards of excellence. “Playwright is a very practical and accessible tool that allows us to run tests effectively across web and APIs, and it offers a full set of tools.” But having the right tools is only the first step. Moises also highlights how this tool, combined with EPAM’s high-level test automation architecture and flexible framework, has enabled him to develop solutions fully tailored to each client's needs.

“For example, how our frameworks handle layers allows for a solid structure that makes it easy to assign responsibilities. This makes it significantly easier to adapt to any changes in the project efficiently. And all of this is founded in EPAM’s EngX principles.” For Moises, EPAM’s approach to quality engineering goes beyond technical expertise and is grounded in a commitment to excellence, rooted in the company’s values of adaptability, innovation and going beyond the basics to create something unique for each project.

Another reason Playwright has become Moises’ tool of choice is how easily it integrates with AI models, as it has native capabilities to work alongside Claude, Copilot or your model of choice to help create optimized scripts and ensure comprehensive coverage.

“In fact, last year we started an AI literacy program, which has taken us from the basics to full-on application,”  he explains. This program has enabled Moises’ team to develop concrete strategies for meaningful implementation. Now, AI is an inherent part of all our tests, as it’s built into our Azure DevOps testing tools, empowering us to create more consistent, better scripts and deliver them significantly faster.

What Advice Do Leaders Have for Aspiring Quality Engineers?

Since his childhood, Moises has always tried to use his talents and skills to support his community. Currently, he volunteers with a variety of NGOs to help them create effective platforms that enable them to reach more people and increase their impact. He also works with several animal rescue organizations to ensure that dogs and cats find homes where they can be safe and bring joy.

This commitment to making a positive impact also extends to his daily work, as he’s become a mentor to the next generation of test automation talent. When we asked him to share a bit of that knowledge with us, he stated, “If I were to give advice to people trying to start their career with us, I’d suggest taking some training to understand the basic programming languages and get a deep understanding of the key concepts for each one. Having solid basics will lead to better scripts. After that, particularly when it comes to AI, never be afraid to experiment and remember that your technical interviewer is friendly. So, as long as you’re well prepared and confident in your skills, you’re good to go.”
