Thriving in Transformation: How EPAM’s Agile Leaders Redefine the Future with AI

Thriving in Transformation: How EPAM’s Agile Leaders Redefine the Future with AI

With AI quickly changing every industry, it’s easy to see why some might feel uneasy about the future. However, for Agile leaders at EPAM, AI serves as a motivation to adapt quickly alongside technological advancements. We view this change as a catalyst for growth, enabling us to focus on continuous learning and drive innovation through human-centered design. The bottom line? Our work as Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches at EPAM, and our approach to projects, will evolve — making space for modern advancements along the way.

The Future of AI Automation and Team Dynamics

Over the next year or two, AI is projected to streamline redundant tasks, allowing us to focus on what matters most: human-centered creativity. We will continue to modernize our processes and reduce the effort required for tedious tasks.

For example, AI tools can already help us by:

  • Automating sprint summaries
  • Finding blockers
  • Pulling retrospective themes from text
  • Suggesting sprint goals based on backlog patterns

Looking ahead to the next three to five years, we may see AI handle almost every repetitive Agile task, such as:

  • Making creative workflow visuals (known in Agile as burndown charts)
  • Predicting velocity trends
  • Keeping track of works in progress
  • Nudging teams automatically

With an increase in automation, it is important to note that culture, trust and our creative energy will remain human-driven.

How our teams operate won’t change simply because of a shift in the available data; rather, our teams will evolve with technology, paving the way for new leadership styles and job titles. At EPAM, our leaders thrive in transformation, and we may start seeing titles like “Agile Performance Partner” or “AI-Driven Coach.” The mission remains: we will continue leading the way for collaboration and human creativity.

Ten Ways AI Will Be Your Strategic Partner

The shift toward human-driven AI means that 50% to 70%   of current administrative and analytical tasks can be streamlined using AI. For example, on a recent project, a team coach had been following up with developers to update tickets and calculate velocity by hand. By integrating AI tools built into the project management software (like Jira or Azure DevOps and communication tools like Microsoft Teams) he was able to rely on the AI to check the code repository and view a daily “blocker report” as preparation for stand-up calls. AI also suggested a revised goal  based on the team’s holiday schedule and their past six months of project momentum. This reorganization provides the team with more opportunities to innovate and be creative, while AI helps facilitate routine tasks.

To optimize innovation, Scrum Masters will need to adapt by becoming system designers. By combining data, psychology and storytelling, they can ensure cutting-edge results.

Here are 10 ways Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches can partner with AI as technology and our roles advance over the next decade.

  1. Systemic Thinking and Organizational Design: AI can map dependencies, but only humans can redesign a system. Our leaders will find bottlenecks across teams, optimize value streams and contextualize business language, such as OKRs, throughput and impact. For example, we may suggest splitting a team into smaller, value-focused pods to cut delivery time.
  2. Facilitation Mastery: Using AI to make meeting plans and summarize key messages gives leaders the space to focus on the people. By reading the mood of a room or online meeting, we can better encourage collaboration, stop unhelpful conversations and optimize creativity.
  3. Emotional Intelligence:  Empathy is uniquely human. While AI may have responses to certain human emotions, such as anger or frustration, it can’t connect with us in genuine, human ways. We must partner with our AI by bringing a human perspective to AI deliverables. As individuals, we can often observe when others are losing interest or getting tired based on our instincts and observations. We can adjust the goals of a sprint and utilize AI to reframe our options as we shift conversations based on project needs. And, while some individuals are highly analytical, they are still better at reading human emotions than a computer is.
  4. Change Leadership: Like emotional intelligence, AI might recognize when something doesn’t add up, but only humans can inspire real organizational shifts. When AI identifies an issue, we can partner with it to implement a change and gauge effectiveness.
  5. Strategic Influence and Executive Coaching: AI provides data, but humans have a unique ability to turn that data into action. As Agile Coaches, we can help leaders make decisions based on information collected by AI. Furthermore, humans can link Agile maturity to business results and show how team performance affects the company in specific ways.
  6. AI-Augmented Agile Operations: We can partner with AI to improve work processes and save time. AI can automatically summarize meetings and prepare coaching reports, saving several hours of work each week.
  7. Team Dynamics and Culture Design: Culture can't be generated by a machine. By creating automated systems for team feedback, we can utilize AI to create a safe space for our team members to speak up and share their thoughts. (For example, we introduced a "Red Card Rule" that let anyone anonymously stop a meeting if it was going off track. This made people feel more empowered and less stressed.)
  8. Facilitating Learning: AI can give lessons and ideas for skills growth, but   humans create learning pathways and implement this knowledge. Through hands-on learning and small coaching sessions, we can build communities where people help each other grow, utilizing AI as a tool.
  9. Ethical Leadership: As AI becomes more widespread  , it is our responsibility to ensure we’re partnering with it ethically. While we want our teams to feel comfortable using AI as a tool, we must also ensure that we’re using automation responsibly and are aware of the potential bias and its broader implications for our work.
  10. Personal Brand: The next wave of Agile leaders will seamlessly integrate AI into the experiences and events they lead. AI will become part of each leader’s brand as a strategic partner, helping them gain visibility and influence.
