Partnership: The Engine Driving the Future of Commerce
A recent conversation between Alexander Ives, Senior Director of Technology at Boden, and Matt Bradbeer, Commercial Lead, Empathy Lab & DEP at EPAM, provides a look into how collaborative relationships can unlock new possibilities in commerce beyond individual solutions or tools. Explore more about how we helped Boden modernize their storefront with Shopify in our case study — Happiness in Every Click: Boden’s Digital Evolution.
Commerce is changing at an unprecedented pace. For organizations to stay relevant and thrive, innovation and responsiveness need to be embedded into every facet of their operations. But the tools themselves are only one part of the story. The real drivers of progress are partnership, alignment and a shared focus on delivering meaningful customer experiences.
Navigating Uncertainty with Collaborative Vision
Market unpredictability is the new norm, but uncertainty also presents an opportunity for bold organizations to rethink how they invest and innovate. The most successful businesses don’t simply chase the latest trends; they work closely with partners who bring both critical thinking and fresh perspectives to the table.
MATT: “How do you invest your way out of the situation you’re in at the moment. Because you do have an option: you can invest and hope you get it right, or you can sit back and wait. And certainly in the dot-com boom, it was the people who invested that got ahead of the game. Anybody who didn’t really jump in and think about what they’re doing had to play catch-up, maybe five years later on, and spend a lot of money trying to catch up.”
This insight is particularly important in the AI Era, where similar pressures are forcing businesses to reconsider their technology strategies to stay competitive. While companies feel the need to invest in AI solutions, undertaking projects without a solid strategy almost always ends up being expensive and ineffective. The right partner can help businesses stay the course and ensure its investments are meaningful.
MATT: “The challenge we have with clients is that they’re desperately looking for what that strategy is around AI, but not necessarily understanding what good looks like, what the actual use-cases for AI are, and what will be effective for them as a company.”
The combination of market uncertainty and generational hype around AI presents a unique opportunity for businesses. However, the potential for missteps is great. Taking a step back from trends and leaning into collaboration with proven partners helps ground strategy in context and purpose — and, crucially, keeps the project aligned with the business.
MATT: “You have think, ‘Okay, what is we’re trying to achieve here? What are we trying to address? … The people that sit back and think about it, plan it and coordinate it as a business, together, are the ones that are going to be the most successful.”
Collaboration as a Catalyst for Transformation
Resilient growth requires more than surface-level change. When teams are supported by trusted partners, they can move beyond day-to-day problem solving and focus on shaping what comes next for their customers. That is especially important for technology like AI, which has uses ranging from making everyday tasks more efficient to transforming workflows and processes.
ALEX: “What we’re trying to do is focus on the best use-cases. It’s really finding those use-cases where it’s going to have value and using that to bring the business along on the journey… We have blended Boden permanent staff, engineers, with our EPAM colleagues. They work in teams together and EPAM is really helping us push AI in that space… We are more advanced in our engineering department than anywhere else in the business.”
Making the Case for Purposeful Change
Building organizational consensus for transformation isn’t just about technology, but also about making a strong case for how change serves customers and unlocks long-term value. By staying laser-focused on the business perspective, not only are transformations more successful, but they can stay true to their goal of providing meaningful change and innovative impact.
ALEX: “One of the things that really helped us was we had a really robust business case that we could bring to the table… As we were coming out of that ‘best-of-breed’ and ‘legacy’ technology stack into a single platform, we were able to offer some really significant cost savings, in terms of cost to run and it and the amount of resources we needed to deliver new features on the platform.”
By making transformation sustainable, it can be repeatedly proven through measurable improvements, like cost savings, resource reallocation and the freedom to direct more energy toward delivering value for the business, more efficiently.
Earning Trust & Building Momentum
Lasting impact comes from trust, transparency and continuous alignment. The most effective collaborators work from day one to ensure everyone is clear on goals, potential risks and what success could look like as the organization evolves.
Matt: “We have a framework that we bring from the beginning to give an understanding of how to govern massive transformations through our experience over the last 30 years. It’s really important, early on, to align behind the strategy and the North Star. Really establishing quickly from a client, ‘What is it that you are trying to achieve?’”
Partnership-driven governance empowers teams, addresses challenges early and provides stability when navigating change. Crucially, partners can help bridge gaps in experience and knowledge. This foundation is what allows businesses to adapt quickly and confidently, even in uncertain times.
Looking Forward
Boden’s transformation journey reminds us that the future of commerce is shaped as much by relationships and shared purpose as it is by the platforms beneath them. Partnership remains the throughline — enabling clarity of vision, a culture of innovation and ongoing connection with evolving customer expectations.
True commerce transformation is a collective effort. By foregrounding teamwork, open-mindedness, and customer empathy, organizations can build lasting momentum in an increasingly dynamic landscape.
