Switching Scripts: The Transition from Pharma to Tech

Switching Scripts: The Transition from Pharma to Tech

With a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, Ioana Dutca began her career in healthcare. Often using cutting-edge tech solutions in her work, she noticed the transformative role IT plays in healthcare, from data analysis to innovative patient care solutions. With the knowledge that technology is revolutionizing the healthcare industry, she sought to learn more about a lifelong interest: programming.

Now a Junior Software Engineer at EPAM, Ioana says, “My interest in the IT field began in high school. I was fascinated by the logic behind programming and how technology solves real-world problems.”

During her time as a pharmacist, she witnessed the impact of tech on the healthcare industry firsthand. This motivated her to begin learning Java programming on the side. “The logical structure and creativity required for coding intrigued me, and I realized I wanted to build solutions, not just use them.”

Choosing EPAM Campus

Ioana says that the EPAM Campus was the natural choice for transitioning from healthcare to IT.

“EPAM’s reputation for nurturing talent and fostering innovation made it obvious to me,” she says. “The Campus program provided a path for beginners transitioning into tech and offered practical and comprehensive training.” EPAM Campus helps learners choose a training program that meets their skill level, then gain market-oriented skills to jumpstart their careers in technology.

“I participated in self-study programs like the Java Start Program. I also completed the Java Stack Training and Advanced Java and Cloud Training, which included weekly mentoring sessions,” Ioana adds. She especially appreciated the focus on collaboration and mentorship. “From day one, I felt supported and challenged.”

After completing her courses, Ioana applied for a full-time position at EPAM. She was offered a position and became an official member of the EPAM team!

A New Tech Professional

Ioana brings a unique combination of analytical sharpness and problem-solving skills to the technological landscape and her role at EPAM. Her ability to navigate this new path comes from the confidence she gained from the support of her colleagues. “I felt so welcomed by everyone,” she says, noting the dynamic, team-based environment. “Every day brings new opportunities to learn, grow and contribute to meaningful projects. The culture here encourages curiosity and innovation, which motivates me to push my boundaries.”

Being part of tech communities is another motivator for Ioana. “You can learn so much from collaboration and the experiences of others,” she shares.

Providing Perspective

Ioana is quick to share her experience and provide tips and recommendations for anyone transitioning into tech who may feel somewhat daunted by the interview process.

“Showcase your skills — emphasize things from your previous career relevant to tech, like problem-solving, attention to detail and communication,” she says. “Highlight courses, projects or certifications that show your growth and commitment to continuous learning. And be honest about your journey! Share your motivation for entering the tech space and how you have prepared.”

Ioana also encourages using additional learning materials like books and online forums.

Advice for Changing Careers

Ioana has positive advice for anyone interested in switching to a tech career. “Don’t be afraid to start over. It’s never too late to pursue a passion,” she encourages. “Make sure you have a plan and prepare for your new path. Take small steps — whether learning a programming language or understanding the basics of the field. Don’t be afraid to seek professional support. Look around for programs like EPAM Campus that guide beginners and provide mentorship.” Ioana notes that staying committed to the goal is the most important part. “The journey can be challenging, but persistence and a growth mindset will make it worthwhile.”
