Advantages & Design Considerations for Automotive Market’s Broad Adopting of Android OS

Adoption of Google Android Automotive OS (AAOS) is rapidly growing among global automotive OEMs and automakers. It’s a current trend in automotive and the expectations are that the market share of Android powered vehicles will raise over the time to stunning 18% by 2027. It is interesting for the OEMs particularly because it has a range of advantages and opens the opportunities for the new revenue streams. Along with the opportunities there are some general caveats that should be considered before embarking the journey with AAOS adoption.

Diving deep into the implementation topics, mentioned key challenges which authors discovered during the research and implementation of Proof-of-Concept (PoC) project. Starting from the implementation of the Hardware Abstraction Layers (HALs) and ending up more general questions of Build and Integration which considering the AAOS specifics adds the complexity of building the highly customizable solution.

There presented the description of the PoC project with high level architecture along with the ideas applicability of which we intended to prove. The ideas here are considered not only the lower level of the Android stack, but also the customization approach of the HMI and Launcher application.
